What Is Net Metering?
Any electricity coming from your solar panels that is not used by your home’s appliances flows through your utility meter (spinning it backward) and into the electrical grid for others to use. This is often the case during the day, when you are at work.
At night, or any other time your house draws more power than your solar panels are providing, power flows from the grid, through your meter (spinning it forward like normal) and to your circuits.
Net metering is an arrangement with your utility where you are billed for the net amount of electricity you use from the grid. Some months, your net electricity use from the grid may be less than zero, in which case you earn credit with the utility that you can apply to a future bill or “cash out” in the form of a check!
