What Is Net Metering?
During the day, if your solar system generates more electricity than your house draws, excess power from your system flows through your utility meter (spinning it backward) and into the electrical grid for others to use. At night, or any other time your house draws more power than your solar system is providing, power flows from the grid, through your meter (spinning forward like normal) and to your circuits.
Net metering is your utility billing you for the net amount of electricity you used from the grid. Some months, your net electricity use from the grid may be less than zero, in which case you can apply those banked hours to a future bill or “cash them out” in the form of a check from the utility.
